Cost Of The Healthy Food Basket Decreases Slightly

The cost to eat healthy remains high in the Kenora and Rainy River district.

The Northwestern Health Unit's latest food costing survey finds a family of four paying roughly 976 dollars a month to eat healthy.

Nutritionist Julie Slack says it's a slight drop over last year, when their healthy food basket cost just over $1,000.

However, Slack says many families are still having a tough time putting healthy food on the table.

"58.9 percent of these families that are struggling are actually working.  So they are working families.  Whether that's precarious employment, whether that is the minimum wage is too low.  People just can't make ends meet."

Slack says planned increases to the minimum wage and the test of a guaranteed annual income are measures that could help many eat healthier in the future.
