Kenora MP Bob Nault says he's extremely pleased to see Bill C-45, the Cannabis Act, pass in the House of Commons.

The Liberal says the time has come to regulate the legal sale of marijuana, stressing the present system has failed us miserably.

Nault says the current approach has allowed criminals and organized crime to profit, while failing to keep cannabis out of the hands of youth.

He notes we can no longer pretend that there is nothing wrong with the current system.

Nault says the Cannabis Act strikes the perfect balance between cracking down on organized crime and keeping pot out of the of hands of young people.

Nault notes right now it's easier to buy pot on the streets than it is to purchase alcohol or smokes.

He adds in the last year alone, 21% of youth reported having using marijuana.

The Liberal member says today over 699,000 Canadians have a criminal record as a result of convictions related to possessing small amounts of marijuana.

Nault says the new legislation provides strict laws surrounding the sale and purchase of Cannabis, including up to 14-years in jail for anyone convicted of selling marijuana to youth.
