The misuse of antibiotics is accelerating at an alarming rate and it is now one of the biggest threats to global health today.

That's why this week has been deemed as Antimicrobial Awareness Week.

Dr Kerry MacDonald who is apart of the The Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee at the hospital says some diseases are becoming harder to treat as the antibiotics used to treat them are becoming less effective.

The public can play a part in helping the problem by washing your hands often, not pressuring your doctor for antibiotics when they aren't needed and not using antimicrobial hand soap.
