Blue green algae blooms continues to plague Lake of the Woods.

The Lake of the Woods Water Sustainability Foundation says algae blooms were wide-spread
last summer and fall.

Todd Sellars is the executive director and says in addition to further study, direct action is needed.

He says funding announced last week by the federal government is a good start.

The federal Ministry of Environment and Climate Change and Department of Foreign Affairs has committed 5.5 million dollars towards water quality studies on Lake of the Woods.

In the meantime, the International Joint Commission will be holding a public session in Kenora this Wednesday (August 10th) to get some feedback on the Lake of the Woods Basin Water Quality Plan of Study, which includes concerns about blue green algae as well as invasive species.
